Ipswich Arts Centre

  • St Clement church is one of three medieval flint churches close to the waterfront in Ipswich. The church is largely C15th with a grand tower, perpendicular windows, a clerestory and an 1860's chancel.

Ipswich Arts Centre CIC proposes to transform the now deconsecrated church into a vibrant arts centre that will serve the whole community. The project will breathe new life into a building of significant heritage and secure its future by creating a space that is able to accommodate a diverse range of uses through which Ipswich's creative communities can be revealed and flourish.

EDRM are providing their services (on a pro bono basis) to design the first phase of this project and assist with the architectural services required when working on a grade II* listed building.

  • As a former place of worship, the principle purpose of St Clement was conceived as one of spiritual enlightenment. IAC proposes to continue the fundamental purpose of spiritual enlightenment by staging a rich program of opportunities for the engagement of the arts.

Historically, much of the church's day-to-day activities were supported by its furniture and fittings; pews for prayer, font for christenings, pulpit for preaching, altar for communion/ worship etc., all played out within the voluminous interior of the church.

  • IAC's occupation of the church will be undertaken as two phases. The first phase will effectively create a pop-up venue by inserting a series of contemporary architectural elements into the space that will allow it to function as a flexible, safe and accessible venue. During this first phase funding will be sought to undertake full and proper conversion works in the years that follow.

The IAC's appropriation of the space will include its own series of movable and modular architectural elements to support the new programme of activity and define new spaces within the monumental spatial excess of the existing church.

At the core of the proposal is the new level floor finish that becomes a 'field' in which these new events are enacted.

This proposal aims to nurture the use of the church in numerous diverse ways, many of which are not predictable, and thereby enable different and even opposite interpretations and use.

  • As part of the first phase, temporary portable toilets are to be located on an existing hard-standing in the north-west corner of the leafy grounds. The enclosure is to be formed as a timber frame with polycarbonate sheet cladding, that will be backlit at night for purposes of way-finding and signage.
